No Wipes in Pipes!
Toilet paper alternatives such as “flushable wipes”, wet wipes, sanitary napkins, and/or paper towels cannot be flushed down the toilet safely. Wet wipes flushed down toilets contribute to many sewer blockages in the District.
Even wet wipes that say they are “safe for flushing” they can still cause serious damage to your home’s plumbing. They don’t dissolve and they clump together causing pipe clogs. Flushing wipes down the toilet might not be an immediate issue, however, the problems will arise later when the wipes move through the sewer system. If it makes it to the sewage treatment plant, the facilities can be overworked trying to process that solid waste.
The result of flushing other products could mean major wastewater treatment issues for your individual home and the District. By flushing these other types of products, we can not only create inconveniences in our services but also incur very costly repairs.
Please take the time to dispose of these products properly in a waste receptacle in your home.
